Carpet and Wall Color Combinations: Tips for a Harmonious Space

Coordinating home decor is not unlike styling a great outfit. Both decor and personal style can be classified by type: formal, classic, casual, or bohemian, for instance. Style is reflected in choosing the major pieces and then adding accessories. In decor, two of the major “pieces” are wall color and flooring; think of them as the “clothes.” The rest of the style comes from “accessories”, such as filling the space with furniture and smaller items to enhance the desired vibe.

An important first step is identifying what kind of style you’d like to capture in your home. Are you looking for something chic, dramatic, relaxed, or eclectic? The style you want to reflect determines how you choose to “dress” your home and guides flooring and wall colors, and ensures they work well together.

Selecting New Carpet

It’s common and practical to go with something neutral, especially if you are running the carpet through a large section of your home. Doing so will free you up to change your mind later about wall colors and other decor items. If at all possible, pick up samples from a retailer to bring home.

Selecting Paint Colors

Once you have narrowed down a few options for carpet, and especially if you have settled on one, head to the paint store! Bring your carpet samples into the store and begin to pull colors that please you. There are no rules; you are designing your space and it should feel good to you. At the same time, you don’t want to pick a wall color that will clash with possible carpets.

We recommend using a color wheel to explore complementary shades that are related to each other. As a great rule of design, neutrals match with other neutrals! Neutral colors have hints of grey and undertones in them that make them easier to match together. Just like you acquire carpet samples to see them in your home, bring home paint samples that you love and take everything inside your rooms.

Testing Carpet Samples & Paint Samples

Once you are at home, place the carpet samples and paint samples in the areas that you are remodeling. Look at them in artificial light and natural light, at different times of the day, paying close attention to how the carpet and paint go together. If they clash at all, or bring out something undesirable, try the paint with different carpet samples. Narrow your choices by eliminating anything that doesn’t coordinate in a way that makes you happy.
