How to Properly Clean Carpet

Most carpet manufacturers recommend adhering to the guidelines set by the Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI). The CRI is a third-party trade association that sets the standard for the industry.

For regular maintenance, the CRI recommends vacuuming your carpet often, especially in high-traffic areas. When vacuuming, go slowly and carefully over the fibers to ensure you’re picking up all of the debris. Be sure to dust first so that it falls to the floor. This way, when vacuuming, you’re getting all of the dust and dirt out of your home. Vacuum at least once a week and be sure to empty and replace vacuum bags regularly.

Did you know that the type of vacuum you use makes an impact on your carpet? Check to see if the vacuum has been tested and has the CRI Seal of Approval. Also, consider a HEPA filter vacuum for your home, especially if you or your family members suffer from allergies or asthma.

While we all try to keep our carpet looking fresh and new, it’ll experience the occasional spill or stain from time to time. Fortunately, many carpets today feature stain-resistant technology. Before spot cleaning a spill, familiarize yourself with your manufacturer’s warranty and know what cleaning solutions are recommended for the type of carpet you have in your home. Before treating the stain, blot it with a clean cloth. Do not use a brush, because this will only damage your carpet! Every 12 to 18 months, the CRI (as well as many manufacturer’s warranties) require deep cleaning by a professional who holds the CRI Seal of Approval in your area.
